Focus on participating in activities that will help you become the healthiest version of yourself, and you will attract like-minded people. Remember to be careful, proceed slowly, and use discernment when meeting new people and deciding whether they are compatible with the new direction your life is taking in recovery. Just because you do the right thing does not mean that it will be appreciated in the short term. But if that person comes to realize that you made a truthful observation in an attempt to save them from themselves, then they will come to respect you for it. They will value you as a member of their own support network.

There’s an active social media component and various gatherings throughout the year. You might be put off by paying for the charge, believing that you should never have to purchase friendship, however, the charge will most likely be equal to, or lower than, the cost of drinking alcohol. But these are pseudo camaraderies, based not on genuinely knowing one another, but instead, a means of easing solitude. You get back what you invest in friendships, so the possibilities of individuals having any real dedication to you past getting you a drink is highly unlikely. Ongoing individual and group therapy sessions are an excellent source of recovery care and support.

Is it hard to date a sober person?

For all this, it is not impossible for a drinker and a sober person to date; like any relationship, however, it requires work, patience, communication, and understanding. Ironically, the sober partner may have an advantage.

The people closest to you are often the ones who are hurt the most by your addiction. And, these are often the people who will be most important in your support group. There are many more sober social apps designed to provide whatever social needs currently exist within the recovery community. Recently featured in our Alumni Newsletter, the Clean Fun Network, is part social network, part on-line dating site, and part travel agency. The site is dedicated to hosting sober travel events, and there is a social network side to the site, which allows you to invite other users to events, post statuses, and connect with people one on one. You spend all day looking at screens — your phone, your computer, your tablet, your watch.
